Sustainico

Rooftop Ward Expansion at Northwick Park Hospital

Project Overview

Sustainico was appointed to project manage the rooftop ward expansion in partnership with MTX. The goal was to deliver a modern 32-bed short-stay ward on top of the existing Accident & Emergency (A&E) department at Northwick Park Hospital, addressing the urgent need for additional patient space in a live clinical setting.

Design & Construction

The project was delivered using off-site manufactured structural steel modules, assembled on site as part of the MMC process.

Offsite Manufacturing

32 structural steel modules were manufactured offsite and installed with a precision lift strategy.

A combination of structural steel chassis with pre-finished interior fit-out and external envelope.

Challenges & Solutions

Working Above a Live A&E Department

Executing the build above one of London’s busiest emergency departments required expert coordination. Sustainico managed logistics alongside MTX, ensuring patient safety and continuous hospital operations.

Complex Lifting Operations

A 40m tower crane with an 80m reach was used to install heavy structural components and 2,000+ construction boards—executed with minimal disruption.

Structural Integration & Access

The ward extension was built on a steel deck supported by existing A&E columns. A 20m link corridor was suspended between the new facility and the main hospital to streamline clinical connectivity.

Outcome

The project was delivered on time and within the 32-week programme. The result is a fully functional, modern healthcare facility offering 32 additional short-stay beds, staff support areas, and clinical spaces. Sustainico’s project management alongside MTX was key in overcoming logistical challenges and delivering value through smart construction.
