Project Overview
Sustainico was appointed to manage the scheme from inception on behalf of MTX who were appointed to deliver a new Urology Outpatients Department at the Royal Berkshire Hospital as part of the NHS Capital for Targeted Investment in Elective Recovery programme.
The scheme was developed to reduce elective backlogs and increase surgical and outpatient capacity. The new facility provides modern, purpose-built accommodation for Urology, Surgical and Outpatients teams, enabling more procedures and consultations to be delivered efficiently.
The building was formally handed over following completion and supports the Trust’s strategy to enhance patient experience while increasing clinical throughput.
Design & Construction
The project used Modern Methods of Construction (MMC) to reach a Pre-Manufactured Value (PMV) of 72%, ensuring speed, precision, and minimal disruption. Highlights include:
This approach:
- Reduced on-site construction duration
- Improved quality assurance through factory-controlled conditions
- Increased programme certainty
- Minimised disruption to the live hospital environment
Clinical Accommodation
The department has been designed to support a wide range of specialist services, including:
- Consulting and examination rooms, Ultrasound scanner room and large treatment room, Lithotripsy suite for non-invasive kidney stone treatment, Treatment and chemotherapy room.
The internal layout was developed to support efficient patient flow, reduce waiting times and enhance staff working conditions.
Challenges & Solutions
The facility was constructed within a fully operational acute hospital campus, requiring careful logistics planning and strict safety controls to maintain uninterrupted 24/7 services.
As part of a nationally funded recovery programme, the scheme demanded accelerated delivery with high programme certainty to support reduction in NHS waiting lists.
Off-site structural and MEP modules required detailed upfront design coordination to ensure seamless on-site assembly and service integration.
The inclusion of lithotripsy, ultrasound and treatment spaces required integrated services design from the outset to meet clinical and compliance standards.
Outcome
The Royal Berkshire Urology Outpatients Department provides a modern, efficient clinical environment that supports increased outpatient capacity and improved patient experience.
Delivered in 44 weeks using MMC and DfMA principles, the project demonstrates:
Effective use of modular construction within acute healthcare
Delivery within a live hospital environment
High-quality clinical accommodation aligned to NHS recovery objectives
Strong collaboration between MTX and the Trust to enhance patient care
